India have left out vice-captain Virender Sehwag and pace spearhead Zaheer Khan for the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, selectors insisting the out-of-form duo were rested and not dropped. Veteran Sachin Tendulkar, chasing an elusive 100th international century, was included in the 15-man squad named on Wednesday that also marks the return of hard-hitting batsman Yusuf Pathan and seamer Ashok Dinda.

Virat Kohli, who fired India to an impressive win over Sri Lanka in Hobart on Tuesday to keep them afloat in the tri-series in Australia, was promoted as vice-captain to skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, as India look to the future.

India squad:

Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt), Virat Kohli (vice-capt), Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Rahul Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Vinay Kumar, Irfan Pathan, Ashok Dinda.

Australia named Michael Clarke for Friday’s one-day international against Sri Lanka but chairman of selectors John Inverarity says the skipper will not be risked unless fully fit.

Clarke has been struggling with back and hamstring problems and missed Sunday’s tri-series game against India.

Clarke remained a doubt for the Melbourne Cricket Ground clash that will decide whether Australia face Sri Lanka or India in the finals.

“One of the uncertainties at the moment is still Michael Clarke’s fitness,” he said.”We think he’s going to be okay for Friday, but we’re certainly going to have a low-risk strategy. If he’s ‘just about right’, I don’t think we’ll play him. “But I think he’ll be okay.”

India kept themselves in series contention with a stunning win in Hobart on Tuesday, belting 321-3 in only 36.4 overs against Sri Lanka to earn a vital bonus point. Game one of the finals series is in Brisbane on Sunday.

The stand-off between rival hockey factions, Hockey India (HI) and Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), is being blamed for the players, particularly those representing the national hockey team, being unable to make it for the inaugural WSH.

Coaches of Bhopal Badshahs, which is led by Indian player Sardara Singh, and Chandigarh Comets told reporters here separately that leading players are unlikely to participate in the WSH since they had neither confirmed their participation so far nor had they joined the training sessions of their respective club sides.

Chandigarh Comets’ coach Hirendra Singh said that he had tried to contact some players but they had not committed their participation so far.

“The Indian team players have not reported for the WSH camp so far. We will carry on with the players that we have,” Hirendra Singh told the media.

Drag-flicker Sandeep Singh, Shivendra Singh and other leading players have also not arrived here so far, nor there is any news about their participation.

Badshahs’ coach V  Bhaskaran also said that he was not sure about the participation of Indian team players in the cash-rich tournament.

The inaugural season of Bridgestone World Series Hockey (WSH) will see a star-studded opening – Bollywood celebrities like Saif Ali Khan, Neha Dhupia and singer Mika will perform at the event here Wednesday.

The opening match of the WSH is between the Bhopal Badshahs and Chandigarh Comets in the month-long tournament.

India will partially boycott the 2012 London Olympics to protest against Dow Chemicals sponsoring the sports event. Indian officials will not only skip the opening and closing ceremonies, but will also boycott all official ceremonies related to the quadrennial event.

However, the athletes will participate in the opening and closing ceremonies.

Indian Olympic Association Secretary General Randhir Singh said that the IOA has not taken any decision to boycott the Games.

“IOA has not taken any such decision. We don’t want the athletes to suffer. We are here for the interest of the athletes. Athletes have been training for so many years, we have not taken any such decision,” said Singh.
